Hybrid cars – Should we be concerned about VOC emissions?

SepSolve Analytical and Markes International products were used in an investigation looking at VOC (volatile organic compound) emissions from hybrid cars in an episode of British investigative current affairs documentary series Dispatches – “The truth about electric cars” – which aired in the UK on Channel 4 in November 2021.

Dispatches teamed up with Buckinghamshire-based company Emissions Analytics to gather data on the levels of VOCs emitted by hybrid cars and compared them to petrol-only and diesel-only vehicles. Using a thermal desorption instrument from Markes International and SepSolve’s GC×GC–TOF MS instrument (INSIGHT® and BenchTOF) with the ChromSpace instrument control and data-mining platform, the team analysed emissions from nine vehicles – six petrol hybrids, two diesels and one petrol vehicle.
