Graduate Opportunity – Field Service Engineer

Do you want to go further than the laboratory with your chemistry related degree?

Schauenburg Analytics Group is looking for talented and driven individuals, looking to get more out of their career than routine laboratory analysis.

If you’ve ever taken your PC to bits to ‘see how it works’; modified your drone to make it fly better; designed a competitor for Robot Wars; fixed a broken household appliance by following a YouTube video or changed the brake pads on your car you may have the skillset we are looking for.

Whilst a grounding in analytical technologies is essential for this role, we understand that your hands-on laboratory experience as a recent graduate is likely to be limited but if you have the right mindset and a drive to succeed, we will provide the training and support you need to develop your career as a field service engineer.

We are looking for graduates who are capable of “thinking on their feet”, have an enquiring mind, and can pro-actively look for ways to improve both themselves and the product or task they are working on.

This graduate opportunity is on the career pathway of our post-sales support team with the objective of becoming a full-time field service engineer in your second year.

What you’ll do

In your first year you will undertake training in our analytical technologies across both our Bridgend and Peterborough facilities

  • Gaining experience across the product ranges of Group companies Markes International & SepSolve Analytical
  • Operate and troubleshoot laboratory instrumentation
  • Assist in the development of new applications
  • Execute proof statements for new development projects & evaluate system capabilities
  • Creating & participating in training webinars and seminars for customers or distributors

In your second year you will undergo service engineer training on our range of analytical instrumentation including thermal desorption, multi-mode extraction & enrichment platform, and time-of-flight mass spectrometry as well as a range of other accessories.

During this year you will

  • Regularly shadow an experienced field engineer assisting with a wide range of service calls
  • Start to undertake smaller field service engineer visits for routine maintenance and some installations
  • Build on your problem-solving skills and develop your analytical knowledge as you visit a wide variety of laboratories and develop your relationship with our customers.
  • Continue your training and development through a variety of channels including structured classes, online training, and in-field mentoring.

Travel is an essential part of this field-based role and applicants must be willing to travel routinely as part of the job.  Initially this will be predominantly in the UK, and you will be supplied with a company car once you are trained.  However, as our team supports colleagues & customers across Europe and the rest of the world, there will be opportunities for international travel as experience is gained.

All our teams work closely together to ensure that we deliver high quality technical innovations for our customers and your experience and feedback as a field engineer will have an influence on our future products.

What we offer

  • Dynamic, independent, and varied role away from the routine lab analyst pathway with excellent career progression for the right candidates – we have a track record of promotion from within.
  • Attractive starting salary with ongoing reviews as you take on more responsibility and progress your career
  • Structured training and personal development plan during your career with us
  • 24 days holiday plus bank holidays
  • Health cash plan for routine healthcare for example optical, dental, physiotherapy etc. Also includes wellbeing & counselling services.
  • Cash & discount rewards scheme, free refreshments & fruit on site, salary sacrifice scheme including electric vehicle scheme & cycle-to-work.
  • Brand new HQ building including state-of-the-art technology laboratories, spacious offices and seminar suite, with free on-site parking including EV chargers.
  • Company car (once service training complete)
  • Friendly, meritocratic culture, with an excellent reputation for internal staff development and low staff turnover rates.

What you’ll bring

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry or a related discipline
  • Solid theoretical understanding of chromatography
  • Some hands-on laboratory experience would be preferable, with GC (or HPLC) and mass spectrometry (including their operating systems). This could be gained either during lab work as a student (e.g., work experience, final year project, placement year etc.) or in post graduate employment.
  • Excellent communication skills are a must – you will be comfortable with verbal, video and written communication technologies across all media, tech-savvy, and with clear experience using Microsoft platform products.
